OpenAI’s Astra has reignited the AGI debate, with Jensen Huang declaring its arrival and researchers questioning the evidence. As autonomous AI advances, the race into 2027 will test who can turn greater capability into economic value while keeping human oversight firmly in place. The stakes climb.

“AGI has arrived.” Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang’s declaration, congratulating OpenAI on GPT-6 Astra, has turned a model launch into a debate over whether artificial general intelligence is already here. His endorsement carries commercial weight: Nvidia supplies the computing infrastructure powering this advance. It is also a claim, rather than a settled scientific verdict.

Released on 3 September, Astra strengthens the case that AI is becoming capable of handling substantial assignments. OpenAI reports improvements across computer use, software engineering, science and professional workflows.

In one computer-use evaluation, Astra achieved higher performance in approximately 47 per cent less time than GPT-5.6 Sol. These are company-reported results, but they illustrate why the conversation has shifted towards how much work people can delegate.

The practical examples are revealing. Legal technology company Legora reports that an Astra-powered agent checked financial statements across 41 documents in minutes, identifying all four deliberately planted errors, including a £500,000 discrepancy. Professional judgement remained with the human reviewer. That combination of speed, detailed checking and reviewable outputs points towards a tangible business opportunity.

Financial media are balancing the breakthrough narrative against its implications. Bloomberg Television framed its launch coverage as “a new step toward AGI”, while CNBC highlighted the rollout alongside warnings about advanced cyber capabilities. Researcher Gary Marcus challenged Huang’s declaration for lacking a definition and supporting evidence.

The sharpest caution comes from inside OpenAI.

“This is a time that calls for extreme caution,” chief scientist Jakub Pachocki wrote on 6 September.

Astra is OpenAI’s first model classified at its Critical cybersecurity capability threshold, able under suitable conditions to discover and develop exploits without step-by-step human guidance.

For the remainder of 2026 and into 2027, our assessment is that competitive advantage will increasingly depend on converting these capabilities into dependable economic output. Opportunities extend across software development, scientific research and cyber defence.

The defining contest will involve computing capacity, institutional adoption and the ability to supervise autonomous systems. Astra makes that future more immediate. Whether the AGI label survives scrutiny, the pressure on businesses and governments to respond has intensified.
